Area judgment from width and height information: the case of the rectangle
Article Abstract:
Combinations of horizontal and vertical lines of different sizes, presented on the same wall or on different walls, were shown to adults, nine-year-olds and five-year-olds who were asked to estimate the corresponding area. The objective is to assess the effect on performance of shifting from a perceptual area judgment situation, where the physical quantity to be judged is present in the stimulus, to a situation in which it is not in the stimulus. Results show that the shift from perception to inference had varied effects for participants of different ages.
