Chronic noise and psychological stress
Article Abstract:
Chronic exposure to noise can cause psychological stress in children. This was revealed in a study of the effect of chronic aircraft noise exposure to psychophysiological, cognitive, motivational and affective indices of stress among elementary school children. Chronic noise exposure was found to be linked to elevated neuroendocrine and cardiovascular measures, poorer long-term memory, decreased cardiovascular reactivity to a task presented amid acute noise, deficits in a standardized reading test given under quite conditions and a decline in quality of life on a standardized index.
