Ending the millenium: commentary on "HMO's and the seriously mentally ill - a view from the trenches." (response to an article published in this issue)
Article Abstract:
Consumers are relying less on health maintenance organizations (HMO) in providing for their health care needs due to the commercialization of more health programs including government-funded ones. Despite an increase in the number of agencies offering managed care assistance competing with community mental health agencies, there is concern for the ignorance of the new competitors in dealing with the severely mentally ill. The question on the role of community health centers on whether they should be considered as health care providers or social welfare agencies is also raised.

Defining and affording case management: response to "diversity in case management modalities: the Summit Model." (response to article by Gregory A. Peterson et al. in this issue, p. 245)
Article Abstract:
The proposal by Peterson et al. for mental health services planners to provide a wide variety of case management services is laudable. Nevertheless, the cost of implementing these, especially the Summit Model, needs to be evaluated in light of budgetary constraints. Further research is needed to support the validity of such proposals and win more financial support from both the government and private sector.
