Expressed emotion, adaptation, and patient survival among couples coping with chronic heart failure
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted among 137 men and 47 women to examine whether expressed emotion (EE) captured negative marital influences on patient survival, and it was observed that prevalence of EE was low, patient and spouse EE were unrelated, and spouse EE was not associated with survival. Overall, relations between EE and self-report measures of adaptation were weak and inconsistent, and EE does not show promise in predicting adaptation to chronic heart failure (CHF).

The long-term interplay between family and extrafamily resources and depression
Article Abstract:
A 3-wave prospective panel model was used to consider the concept that depression erodes social resources and the lack of social resources can contribute to depression. Data from depressed patients was assessed and there was little or no evidence for a social selection effect where depression contributed to a decline in family resources. However there was evidence for a social causation effect where family resources contributed to changes in depression.
