Gender identity and material symbols: objects and decision considerations in impulse purchases
Article Abstract:
A new impulse buying model based on a social constructionist theory is presented. It proposes that people buy products on impulse to project self-identity. Gender is hypothesized to influence the choice of products bought impulsively and the purchasing decision-making process. The results of a study on impulse buying in a mature student population support the prediction that products bought on impulse are self-expressive.
