Lack of sensitivity of weight targets compared with body cell mass for determining recovery from malnutrition in adolescents with anorexia nervosa
Article Abstract:
It is argued that weight-based indicators are not effective in assessing recovery from malnutrition in adolescents with anorexia nervosa. It is hypothesized that these indicators would leave some patients with incomplete body cell mass (BCM) accretion and could result in premature termination of refeeding programs. The findings suggest that body compartmental analysis, especially of BCM and body fat, is superior to body mass index as a tool for determining recovery from malnutrition.
