Loneliness, dysphoria, dietary restraint, and eating behavior
Article Abstract:
Herman and Polivy's theory that negative emotions affect eating and diet restraint was studied to verify if loneliness was a factor. Two different methods were used: the situational-experimental design and the dispositional-correlational design. Fifty-eight females took part in the study. The results support earlier studies that loneliness serves to limit food intake for nondieters and the opposite effect for dieters. However, the patterns for loneliness were not present in dysphoria leading to the conclusion that negative moods cannot completely account for the results.

Daily stress, coping, and dietary restraint in binge eating
