Maggie and Dorothea: reparation and working through in George Eliot's novels
Article Abstract:
This article examines the semi-autobiographical works of George Eliot, 'The End of the Mill' and 'Middlemarch,' in order to compare the two protagonists, Maggie and Dorothea. Both characters are viewed as representations and psychological extensions of George Eliot. The author asserts that while George Eliot failed to explore the complete personality of Maggie in the first of the novels, she is able to accomplish a full reparation in the design and portrayal of Dorothea in the second.

On ideas of "the good" and "the ideal" in George Eliot's novels and post-Kleinian psychoanalytic thought
Article Abstract:
The author examines the ethical nature of human development in George Eliot's novel 'Daniel Deronda' and in contemporary psychoanalytic thought. Plato is employed in the task of bridging Eliot's ethical concerns and Klein's views of the good and the ideal, but the article concludes on the assertion that enlightenment originates in the creations of poets and writers.

'Middlemarch' revisted: changing responses to Geoge Eliot
Article Abstract:
The author focuses on the character Dorothea in 'Middlemarch' to examine George Eliot's tendency to create and celebrate self-sacrificial behavior in her characters. Dorothea's life gains meaning only if others give it meaning, her final sacrifice reflects a meaningless heroism imposed upon her by a patriarchal society.
