Mary Jane England, American Psychiatric Assn.'s 124th pres., is insightful and a visionary. Under her creative leadership, the APA achieved major goals, namely, educating the American nation on the nature and treatment of mental illnesses, commitment to international psychiatric efforts and focus on children's needs. England also designed mentoring programs with a view toward recruitment and is responsible for placing APA online. The APA policies that were wrought during her term in 1995-1996, reflect her deep commitment to those who are most vulnerable and powerless.

Jerry M. Wiener, M.D., one hundred twenty-third president, 1994-1995

American Psychiatric Assn. Medical Dir. Melvin Sabshin lauded current APA Pres. Jerry M. Wiener for his efforts to push his programs, despite strong opposition from both Congress and the health care industry. He noted that Wiener's unique ability to nurture those under help significantly contributed to his successful tenure as APA president. Wiener's nurturing character came from his extensive work in the field of child psychology.

Harold I. Eist, M.D., one hundred twenty-fifth president, 1996-1997

The American Psychiatric Assn (APA) Medical Director Melvin Sabshin expressed his appreciation of outgoing APA Pres Harold Eist's efforts to fight the threats looming over the practice of psychiatry. Eist's formative years, his family life, his professional practice and his one-year term as the president of the association were relived. Foremost in Eist's agenda was the battle to defend the rights of patients.
