The National Institute of Mental Health was established in 1946 pursuant to the National Mental Health Act. It was headed by Robert Felix from 1946 to 1964 and by Stanley Yolles from 1964 to 1970. Bertram S. Brown succeeded Yolles and served as Director between 1970 and 1978. During his term, his priorities were child mental health, the mental health aspects of crime and delinquency, and the mental health of minorities. NIMH during the tenure of Director Shervert H. Frazier, M.D. (1984-1986): the mental disorder-based reorganization and research on schizophrenia and severe mental disorders
Article Abstract:
Shervert H. Frazier was appointed Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in 1984 during a relatively peaceful period in the agency's history. The changes introduced by the Reagan Administration had already been absorbed by the NIMH, the economy was recovering from a recession, and the White House and Capitol Hill have achieved a balance of power. Frazier's challenge was to direct the Institute towards useful, high-quality research covering the gamut of mental health needs and interests.
