Neural substrates of fluid reasoning: an fMRI study of neocortical activation during performance of the Raven's progressive matrices test
Article Abstract:
The long-term memory storage is what is often used in answering usual questions. However, questions or problems that are unique and unusual make use of analytical or 'fluid' reasoning. Seven right-handed Stanford University graduate students participated in an experiment where they were given the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test and the fluid reasoning they applied to the test was measured by the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). fMRI results show different brain activities by the participants while solving analytical problems. Findings also reveal that fMRI is a revolutionary tool for brain activity measurement.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of semantic memory processes in the frontal lobes
Article Abstract:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) of the frontal lobe during semantic memory performance indicates that the left interior prefrontal cortex is involved in semantic, rather than perceptual, encoding of words. This part of the cortex shows decreased activation for semantic encoding of repeated words, which implies the implicit retrieval of memory in the initial semantic encoding. It is hypothesized that this region has a subservient purpose in the semantic working memory processes.

Preservation of implicit memory for new associations in global amnesia
Article Abstract:
Research of preserved priming in amnesia suggests that the brain structures and mnemonic processes that allow explicit memory for new associations are not necessarily required for implicit memory for new associations between unrelated words. Amnesia patients exhibit priming for new associations between semantically unrelated and spatially distint stimuli.
