Phonological complexity and word duration in immediate recall: different paradigms answer different questions

This article examines research on the effect of duration and phonemic complexity on the immediate serial recall of words. Two research paradigms are compared and evaluated based on their theoretical focus and their ability to avoid confounds.

The word-length effect and disyllabic words
Article Abstract:
No word-duration effect was found in a series of experiments on immediate serial recall of disyllabic words differing in spoken duration. Syllabic word-length effects, cross-linguistic comparisons and individual differences are discussed.

Effects of visual similarity on serial report and item recognition
Article Abstract:
This article describes research that shows relationships between visual similarity and serial memory. Several shared properties governing each modality and implications for understanding short-term memory are analyzed.
