Precursors to masochistic and dependent character development
Article Abstract:
Analysts treating patients who are dependent, masochistic and narcissistic need to be able to deal with the patients' moments of defensiveness and withdrawal. Patients who experienced being treated as a repository for the negative feelings of a parent when little develop a reliance on the people that abuse them as a means of obtaining affection while perceiving themselves to be indispensable. Patients transfer this dependency and longing for love to the analyst when undergoing therapy, masking aspects of their personality.

The Lacanian subject and grotesque desires: between oedipal violation and narcissistic closure
Article Abstract:
Grotesque desires are central in the Lacanian structure between oedipal violation and the narcissistic search for the self. The characters Quentin, in William Faulkner's 'The Sound and the Fury,' and Hazel, in Flannery O'Connor's 'Wise Blood,' display this tension as they challenge paternal authority and social order. Their search for their lost selves characterizes the Lacanian subject's inability to be.
