Measuring expressed emotion: An evaluation of the shortcuts
Article Abstract:
The Camberwell Family Interview (CFI), the conventionally accepted method of assessing expressed emotion (EE) is described, also discussing some drawbacks in the approach. Alternate ways of assessing EE, a reliable predictor of poor clinical outcomes in patients with major psychopathology, are proposed, evaluating the predictive validity of these measures and providing recommendations in using these assessments.

The structure of expressed emotion: a three-construct representation
Article Abstract:
Expressed emotion (EE) can be used to predict whether schizophrenia patients released from hospital will relapse, and has applications in other areas such as depression and anxiety. A sample of 104 patients with 104 of their relatives was studied using confirmatory factor analysis to examine a model of EE using 3 factors, Emotional Overinvolvement, Positivity and Criticism. The patients suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder or agoraphobia. The Camberwell Family Interview and other measures were used. There was a strong negative correlation between Positivity and Criticism, and there was little relationship between Emotional Overinvolvement and the other factors.
