Predictors and correlates of bereavement in suicide support group participants
Article Abstract:
A study examined bereavement among 210 survivors of suicide who are participants in suicide support groups. Predictors and correlates examined include age of the survivor, gender of the survivor, relationship to the deceased, age of the deceased, time since the death, exposure to the deceased's body, method of suicide, anticipation of the death, participation in support groups, and having support from family or friends.

Cultural explanations for suicide are related to gender role socialization, race, mass media and imitation theory, opportunity theory, the social construction of suicide rates, ceremonial and holiday effects, and alcohol consumption. Economic approaches are related to class, income and income inequality; unemployment; and relative cohort size.

The social integration perspective focuses on factors such as age and the life cycle, domestic integration, religion, community integration and migration, status integration, and political factors.
