Psychiatric evaluation of a "monk" requesting castration: a patient's fable, with morals
Article Abstract:
The story of a 'monk' from Ascension Monastery, who requested for castration, is presented. The monk, who called himself 'Brother David,' was also a member of the Heaven's Gate cult. Because of his castration request, Brother David was referred by a urologist for a psychiatric counseling. The patient felt that his castration would eliminate his sexual desires that interfered with his spirituality. The psychiatric evaluation, the morals of Brother David's story and its relation to cultism and to the ethical aspects of the therapist-patient relationship are discussed.

The future of medical education and teaching: a psychiatric perspective
Article Abstract:
The medical education curriculum should centrally involve psychiatry because the discipline has the advantage of being holistic involving both mind and body and it has applications to other branches of medical science. Furthermore, a significant number of problems discovered by specialists in other medical fields among patients are generally associated with psychiatric disorders. The curriculum should be focused away from hospitals and toward the community.
