Risk management in the practice of behavior therapy: boundaries and behavior
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning therapist risk management in the use of behavior therapy are discussed. Medicolegal risks on the part of the therapist and better treatment for the patient can be ensured through the establishment of better care standards from which deviations can be particularized. Aversion methods, interview of the patient's family or prior therapists, response cost and exposure therapies carry heavier burdens on the therapist. Some suggestions to lessen adverse effects include informed and competent consent from the patient, documentation, willingness to consult and careful monitoring of treatment outcome.
