Saying "no" to cigarettes: a reappraisal of adolescent refusal skills
Article Abstract:
Questionnaires were given to pupils in two secondary schools in England, United Kingdom, to look at their refusal skills with relation to smoking. The survey was carried out in just two schools and respondents relied on memory to answer the questions. However, it showed that refusing a cigarette is a complex process which varies depending on the situation, who is offering the cigarette and how often they have been offered in the past. An offer from a best friend is more likely to be accepted than from anyone else. Academic pupils are less likely to be offered a cigarette.

Smoking behaviour in youth: the problem of low self-esteem?
Article Abstract:
Studies have shown that it is not easy to draw a straight correlation between smoking and a lack of self-esteem. Teenagers who were 'socially isolated' had low self-esteem but tended not to smoke while those anxious to retain a place in their peer group had high self esteem but also smoked. Smoking is associated with status and being popular. Disaffected youngsters smoked because it was considered to be rebellious. Smoking is a group-driven activity. Only conventional groups had high self esteem and a low incidence of smoking.
