Self-injurious behavior in Rhesus monkey: new insights into its etiology, physiology, and treatment
Article Abstract:
Self-injurious Behavior (SIB) is a human health problem frequently associated with profound intellectual disabilities, genetic diseases, and psychiatric conditions. Studies showed that about 14% of the individually housed monkeys bit themselves with sufficient force to occasionally inflict wounds require veterinary intervention. The findings suggest that SIB may be a coping strategy to reduce arousal.

Early predictors of self-biting in socially-housed rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)
Article Abstract:
The effects of three rearing conditions on biting behavior and whether early infant behavior can predict later self-biting in socially-housed rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are examined. The results have shown that surrogate rearing in combination with lower levels of social contact during play might be risk factors for the later development of self-biting behavior.

Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are not neophobic toward novel food with a high sugar content
Article Abstract:
Rhesus macaques are presented with novel foods that contained a low, high or no amount or sugar in order to find out the factors affecting the neophobic response. The results have shown that rhesus macaques displayed a neophobic response to the no-sugar novel foods but not to the high-sugar novel foods.
