Shape recognition inputs to figure-ground organization in three-dimensional displays
Article Abstract:
Three experiments examining perception indicate that shape recognition appears to be involved in the perception of figure-ground relationships where three-dimensional displays are used as stimuli. This was indicated in various dependent measures, and it appears that processes involved in recognizing shapes affect the first assessment of figure-ground relationships, and are not confined to figure-ground reversal. This finding on initial computations did not apply to random-dot stereograms, though was applicable to black and white stereograms, so borders appear to vary in terms of how they work as stimuli for shape recognition.

Inversion and configuration of faces
Article Abstract:
The results of an experiment to examine perception of disorted faces indicate that wholistic information is used in assessing upright faces but inverting the eyes and mouth of faces leads to judgement based on the component parts of a face. The experiment used faces with inversion of mouths and eyes, faces with distortion due to moving eyes and mouths, and faces with posed expressed aimed to appear grotesque. Inversion appears to interfere with the processing of a certain type of wholistic data, leading to assessment through component parts.

Mental rotation, mental representation, and flat slopes
Article Abstract:
Four experiments in the field of mental rotation, to examine how stimuli are perceived indicate that perception can be handedness specific and orientation-free, in contrast to previous work on this topic. Mental representations appear to vary and to be linked to motivation, and some types of representation such as handedness specific and orientation-free, are more difficult than others, such as representations where both orientation and handedness are specific, or both are free.
