The deterrent effects of initial sanction on first-time apprehended shoplifters
Article Abstract:
A large majority of shoplifters caught for the first time are deterred from committing subsequent shoplifting offenses by their initial arrest and official punishment, according to a study of 3,973 cases involving first-time shoplifters. Among those attending a court-ordered treatment program, the rate of recidivism was 8% over the one- to four-year followup period, while the recidivism rate for those choosing not to attend the program was 21.1% over the same timespan. Voluntary nonparticipation in the program may serve as a predictor identifying offenders more likely to persist in shoplifting.

Variables related to recidivism among juvenile offenders
Article Abstract:
Variables related to recidivism among juvenile offenders have been studied. The factors that best predicted recidivism were age at first conviction, alcohol abuse, status conviction, length of first incarceration, group home placement and birth order. Length of first incarceration and subsequent convictions were positively correlated for first-time offenders.
