The effectiveness of policy and health education strategies for reducing adolescent smoking: a review of the evidence
Article Abstract:
A review of the best way to stop adolescents smoking looked at empirical research data in scientific journals and other data from surveys. The researchers concluded that combining six main measures is the best approach to take. This means increasing the price of tobacco, banning tobacco advertising, educating young people about smoking, running innovative programmes in schools, making tobacco only available in tobacconist shops and introducing tighter controls on labeling. Having an age-restriction is not effective because it is hard to police.

Smoking behaviour: predisposition or adaptation?
Article Abstract:
A large part of adolescent smoking can be attributed to experimentation and they do not always continue to smoke. However, adolescents who consider themselves to be smokers are unlikely to stop. Starting to smoke is a response to the present situation rather than a considered action. The home background is a factor in uptake but immediate issues such as problems at school and self confidence are more important. The person may know about the health risks but they manipulate their knowledge to suit their own situation.

The meaning of smoking as health and social risk in adolescence
Article Abstract:
Youth who smoke have substantial information about health risks associated with smoking, state a readiness to quit that subsequently decreases after 20 years of age, and yet continue to smoke. Interactive models of smoking suggest joint influences of biological and addictive components, cultural components, psychological processes, and demographics.
