The relationship between lethality of attempted suicide and prior suicidal communications in a sample of residential youth

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated the relationship between suicidal communication and suicidal behaviour in 46 adolescents in residential care. Earlier research has shown that 80% of adolescents who attempt or complete suicide engage in some form of suicidal communication before the event. This research corroborated these findings as 20% of the suicide attempters had engaged in no communication about suicide before the event, but also revealed that a further 20% had made only one suicidal communication. The adolescents from these two groups were the ones who used more lethal methods in their suicide attempts.

Few schoolchildren use smokeless tobacco products and most of those who do are white males. However, these boys are significantly likely to engage in risky behaviours and to report feelings of stress and depression, particularly if they also smoke cigarettes.
