Understanding data when interactions are present or hypothesized
Article Abstract:
Interpretation of data showing interaction effect should be based on the conceptual nature of the variables under study and relevant psychological theories. While an alternative approach suggests the need for separately interpreting the interaction residuals, the traditional way of interpreting interaction suggest that cell means reflect a difference between means. The focused contrast for testing interaction hypotheses involves problems related to the confounding of multiple sources of meaningful variance and the match between hypotheses and statistical tests.

Vulnerability of contrast tests to simpler interpretations: an addendum to Rosnow and Rosenthal
Article Abstract:
Statistical contrasts focused directly on predicted patterns by using single degree of freedom can be effective in investigations. However, when global predicted patterns link tow or more local effect predictions, the confounding of these patterns may lead to the trivialization of the significant contrast. To avoid this problem, it is necessary to consider the relative relevance of data in investigation and the potential sensitivity of contrast to banal alternative interpretations.

On the surprising longevity of flogged horses: why there is a case for the significance test
Article Abstract:
Significance tests have several valuable uses despite their alleged misleading conclusions. They can be useful in defending research against claims that random factors sufficiently explain research results. They can also be used to counter allegations that the direction of mean difference was unconvincingly presented. Critics have failed to consider important significance tests that evaluate 'goodness of fit' of models to data.
