Article Abstract:

The factors which mitigate the effect of war stress exposure and those that increase stress resistance under natural disaster conditions may not be the same factors. Study should explore personal and environmental resource factors that improve psychological resistance for a range of stressful events including those which are comparatively common such as bereavement.

Not without a trace: resilience and remembering among Bosnian refugees (commentary on "a family survives genocide")(response to Stevan Weine et al. in this issue, p. 24)
Article Abstract:
Social science and psychiatry fail to fully explain human response to extreme events such as genocide and warfare. In terms of memory, gender and generational differences may exist. As for resilience, many victims of war and genocide surprisingly thrive despite the experiences they have gone through. The psychiatric community is thus encouraged to allow for the possibility that survivors of atrocities can actually become more resilient and even creative.
