ColorSpan Designwinder
Article Abstract:
ColorSpan's DesignWinder large-format inkjet printer has a 36- by 50-inch drum and uses eight inks with four 'multidensity' colors in addition to the standard CMYK. The multidensity inks make dithering less pronounced and produce images with more continuous tones in addition to providing brighter spot colors and a wider palette. ColorSpan uses a top-notch raster image processor (RIP) workstation with a proprietary 200MHz processor running Windows NT, 64MB of RAM and a 3GB hard disk for storing fonts and queued print jobs. The DesignWinder offers 300-dpi output in a variety of sizes with stunning color quality and uses a superb built-in interpolation algorithm to minimize jagged edges. Printing E-size output in the printer's highest-quality eight-ink mode takes 30 minutes to image; using a single set of CMYK inks reduces print time to five minutes. The inkjet nozzles require frequent maintenance and should be cleaned manually once a day. Pricing is $19,995 for the print engine itself and $12,995 for the RIP server.

Cezanne FT-S5000 flatbed scanner
Article Abstract:
Screen USA's $39,900 Cezanne FT-S5000 is one of a new breed of high-end flatbed scanners that compete directly with drum scanners. The Cezanne is the first scanner to use 'xyz technology,' adding a zoom lens to the mechanisms that move the artwork and optics along separate axes to give a set of three coordinates and focus the entire resolution of its 8,000-element charge-coupled device onto the scanner bed. It generates a true optical resolution of 1,000 to 5,300 dpi depending on the image size. There are four special fluorescent bulbs, two for reflective and two for transmissive scans, tailored to the CCD array. Users can prepare artwork by taping or oil-mounting originals on the scanning bed or position transparencies with a built-in light box. The unit has good facilities for prescans and color correction, although there are some glitches in the ColorScope Pro software. The FT-S5000 is an expensive flatbed, but is a good alternative to a drum scanner for about half the price.

Imacon Flextight Precision Scanner
Article Abstract:
Imacon's FlexTight Precision hybrid scanner attempts to combine the color fidelity of a drum scanner with the speed of a flatbed. The unique design eliminates distortion by not using mirrors and instead using a direct line of sight. The design also contributes to a sharp, clear, straight scan with no tape or messy mounting oils or powders. Despite these attributes, the software is inadequate and the approach to reflective scanning is labored. The result is a less effective scanner. The price for the FlexTight Precision is $16,995. The scanner requires 28 MB of RAM and runs on Windows or Macintosh platforms.
