Emboss without color loss
Article Abstract:
Adobe Photoshop's Emboss filter, which traces white and black lines around the edges of an object to create an etched effect, has the drawback of removing the color from an image. This leaves areas between edges a flat gray. One way to keep color involves using Photoshop's Custom filter, but doing so usually requires considerable arithmetic. Custom utilizes a grid of numerical values that have to add up to one. A simpler way to retain color is to adjust the output of the Emboss filter using blend modes, and then to apply layer and lighting effects. Applying lighting is relatively difficult, but applying layer effects is not. How to do both is explained.

Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator and Rayflect PhotoTracer
Article Abstract:
Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator and Rayflect's PhotoTracer are both Adobe Photoshop plug-ins that develop 3D images. Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator employs sweeping technology to build simple 3D models from vector graphics. The interface has three sections for positioning the camera, lighting and detailing the object's surface. This $199 software is not sufficient for creating subtle textures or complex models, but is a powerful tool for adding 3D to a Web site. Rayflect's $129 PhotoTracer lacks modeling tools, but will build and render simple 3D scenes. The rendering capabilities are impressive, but lack shadows.
