Faster than a speeding librarian
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's Bookshelf CD ROM contains ten popular reference books: a spelling checker, Roget's II: Electronic Thesaurus, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 1987 World Almanac, The Chicago Manual of Style, US ZIP code directory, a grammar checker, customized templates for standard business forms, and the Business Information Sources directory. Searches on single or multiple words take only seconds. Up to 50 pages of text or tabular material can be pasted into a word processing document. However, Bookshelf may conflict with other memory-resident programs, it cannot be shared over a network, and nothing else can be stored on the read-only disk. Bookshelf is available by itself for $295 from Microsoft or bundled with Amdek's Laserdrive 1 CD ROM drive for $1,290. Bookshelf is not copy protected and requires 512K, hard disk drive and one floppy drive, DOS 3.1 or later, CD ROM drive.

Graphics at your fingertips
Article Abstract:
Solutions International's art cataloging and conversion program, The Curator, helps Macintosh users keep track of computer graphics and ensures that the user's program can read whatever picture that is needed. The $139.95 program requires 512Kbytes and two floppy drives (at least one 800Kbytes). A hard disk is recommended. Users can organize, locate, convert, display, and print art in all major formats using a stand-alone program or a desk accessory. The program beats its competitors in its ability to convert programs and handle seven formats, but it is better suited to handling user-generated art, rather than prepackaged clip art. The interface is also somewhat awkward. Despite these flaws, this program is recommended, but artists who use lots of prefabricated art, or work with PostScript text files and incompletely implemented EPS formats should look elsewhere.

Wordstar plays catch-up
Article Abstract:
Wordstar Professional 4 ($495, upgrade from version 3.3 for $89) comes with a 14-page list of 82 new features. For example, the new program includes: three-line headers and footers; macro capabilities; and line drawing and math functions. Micropro has also added support for proportional spacing, italics, and foreign alphabets. The program allows you to do what good word processing programs allow you to do, but procedures are sometimes complex. The program is recommended for persons who use Wordstar and do not have time to learn a new word processor; the program delivers up-to-date capabilities.
