Four-color finesse: prepress polish comes your way with Aldus PrePrint
Article Abstract:
Aldus Corp's PrePrint four-color separation software package for the Macintosh creates four-color separations directly from TIFF and Aldus's Open Prepress Interface (OPI) files. This allows complete color pages to be sent directly to the imagesetter from such desktop publishing programs as QuarkXPress, PageMaker and DesignStudio. The $495 program provides an introduction to prepress through dialog boxes and supports varying levels of control. The Auto Gray Balance feature analyzes images and adjusts them to remove color cast, while the Enhance Image feature emphasizes an image's details. Full pages of text and graphics can be separated using the OPI standard file format developed by Aldus in 1989. The flexibility of the program in supporting various levels of experience makes it suitable as a way to learn color prepress skills.

Aldus PrePrint plus PageMaker: separation starter kit
Article Abstract:
Aldus PrePrint 1.5.1, from Aldus Corp, is a color separation utility included with the $795 PageMaker 4.2 package. Applications for PrePrint include separation of OPI and DCS files, color-correction of individual TIFFs and separation of Aldus PageMaker files on the Apple Macintosh. PrePrint produces acceptable separations with lifelike colors that are easily balanced with the controls. Dot shape on halftones cannot be controlled. The software is useful for nonexpert Macintosh users who want to separate simple files. The extensive controls are easy to use and fully explained in the documentation. In order for this to be considered a product for professionals, trapping capabilities would have to be included. PostScript files have to be stored and transported to the service bureau; this can be an expensive process.
