IBM goes gray: IBM Pagescanner, Imagedit, Textreader
Article Abstract:
IBM Pagescanner, a gray-scale scanner, and Textreader, optical character recognition program, are satisfactory if pedestrian; IBM Imagedit gray-scale image-editing program ranks four out of a possible five-star rating. The $495 Imagedit is the most versatile program of its type available for Windows, second only to Aldus's Snapshot video-capture program. With an 8514 monitor, Imagedit permits editing of 256-gray-level images. The $2,395 PageScanner Model 3119, which ranks three of a possible five stars, reads 128 shades of gray at resolutions up to 300 dpi. It is easy to install and operate but accepts only letter-size or smaller pages and the scanner bed moves when in operation, which takes extra desk space. Textreader, $595, recognizes 15 typewriter and 15 dot-matrix fonts and can be easily trained to recognize others. Its errors on a test page were almost all in r-n and v-u confusions, which could be corrected in the program in five or ten minutes.

Pay less for PostScript: Freedom of Press
Article Abstract:
Freedom of Press 2.1A, $495 from Custom Applications Inc, is PostScript interpreter software that emulates PostScript output on more than 40 popular printers. Although Freedom of Press can save users the expense of buying a PostScript printer, it is very slow, can be awkward to use, works only with two Mac-specific printers, and has problems working with MultiFinder and QuarkXPress. Freedom of Press's performance can be improved with moderately priced hardware items, it's the only program in the Mac market that can do the job, and overall it is considered a worthwhile purchase.
