Driving PDF e-zines
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' Adobe Acrobat portable document software, with its PDF format, is becoming a de facto standard for companies and private parties that are launching electronic publications on the World Wide Web. John Deere, the farm implement company, for example, uses the PDF format to compress a 20-pg, graphics-intensive magazine called 'JD Journal' into a PDF file of 4MB, making it possible to distribute the e-zine to its 37,000 employees and customers in 160 countries at a dramatic cost reduction.

Image editors make an impression
Article Abstract:
People making innovative use of image-editing software are profiled. Mac Holbert joined with musician Graham Nash to found Nash Editions in 1990 to offer digital prints of fine art. Holbert has used Adobe Systems' Photoshop since version 1.0, and he says his favorite feature in version 5.0 is adjustment layers. Web designer and artist Barb McMillen uses Corel PHOTO-PAINT to create entire web sites. McMillen appreciates the program's seamless interface. Cartoonist Mark Szorady uses Ulead's PhotoImpact to enhance the hand-drawn panels of his comic strip 'George'. Among his favorite features are the Easy Palette for fast lighting and color-scheme changes, and the SmartSaver for optimizing and compressing comic strips and photographs. Artist Martin Murphy uses MetaCreations' Painter software to paint just as he would with oils but without the fumes. Photographer Paul Dantuono uses Extensis's MaskPro within Photoshop to create his photographic special effects.
