Keeping pace with graphics systems
Article Abstract:
International Data Corp (IDC) industry analyst Kara Yokely says graphics systems are evolving at twice the speed of Moore's Law, which estimates that microprocessor speeds double every 18 months. Workstations are becoming ever more sophisticated, and prices are continuing to fall. High-end UNIX systems are becoming affordable, and at the same time, Intel-based systems running Windows NT are increasingly regarded as adequate for tasks previously regarded as requiring UNIX capabilities. Shoppers are finding that their machines seem outdated almost as soon they are purchased. A professor of Printing and Management Sciences says the trick is to get a system sufficiently adequate for a particular application so that it never slows a user down.

The bits just keep coming; is FireWire the future of connectivity?
Article Abstract:
Apple's FireWire technology offers a fast and smart serial port for connecting peripherals. FireWire uses network-like packet technology to send data in packets instead of a single stream. As many as 63 devices can be daisy-chained or grouped in tree or star topologies through a single port. Cables can be up to 15 feet long. Apple is employing its FireWire technology on its latest Mac G4 systems, but the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has developed a fast serial connection standard known as 1394. The 1394 standard is sophisticated and enables hot swapping of devices. FireWire was developed for the audio/video market and even enables these devices to communicate when the computer is turned off.

Canto Cumulus 5 Single User Edition
Article Abstract:
Version 5.0 of Canto Software's $99 Cumulus, Single User Edition, is rewritten to function more adequately in a wired world. Version 5.0 is an excellent, easy-to-use product, but its ease-of-use is somewhat diminished because of the addition of new features and performance capabilities. Cumulus 5.0, which receives 4 1/2 out of a possible 5 stars, is highly recommended for managing and distributing assets.
