VT600: Varityper
Article Abstract:
Varityper is a high-resolution laser printer that uses the Adobe Atlas Raster Image Processor, the same 68020 processor chip used by the Macintosh II. The Varityper has a built-in 20Mbyte hard disk, half dedicated to font outlines and half to image buffering and storing of bit maps. The hard disk allows faster downloading of fonts. The Varityper does not provide the four Adobe Systems' fonts, but uses its own variations of Times Roman and Helvetica. The Varityper costs $18,750, and has a mandatory $2,950 annual service contract. The Varityper prints 10 pages per minute and has a print resolution of 600 dpi. The Varityper has a 200-page input tray and a 200-page output tray.

Scripten: Qume Corporation
Article Abstract:
Qume Corp's $5,295 Scripten laser printer is fast and includes a paper handling feature, unlike the Laserwriter Plus printer from Apple Computer. The Scripten prints completely in black, but is difficult to set up, with a manual provided just for installing the printer's drum and toner. There are eight indicator lights on the Scripten; however, none of the lights indicates processing a page. Scripten features include: a print speed of 10 pages per minute; resolution at 300 dpi; 3Mbytes of memory; and an emulation mode for the Laserjet Plus.
