Macromedia FreeHand 5.0 (drawing software from Macromedia Inc) (Software Review)(Evaluation)
Article Abstract:
New version 5.0 of Macromedia's $595 FreeHand drawing program has an impressive number of important enhancements that make it the equal of Adobe Illustrator 5.5 and a pleasure to use. The most important improvement is an open architecture that supports a Freehand-specific series of Xtras plug-in filters plus Illustrator plug-ins. The new FreeHand Xtra plug-ins have an extra advantage in that they can create new tools and palettes. Several of the Xtras provide useful automated special graphics effects. Other new additions include far greater redraw speed giving better support for multiple pages, a spell checker, text ruler for setting tabs, text style sheets, floating color-mixing palette and multicolor gradients. The latter provides up to 64 colors per gradient fill.

Macromedia Freehand
Article Abstract:
Version 8.0 of Macromedia's FreeHand draw software, which costs $399, is flexible and rich with features. Version 8 performs well and incorporates a responsive interface. Users can push, pull, drag and drop, arranging their screens to maximize productivity. Version 8's new transparent-lens fill is especially noteworthy. Transparenetly filled objects can be placed over other objects, like pieces of translucent glass. The degree of an object's opacity is controlled from the Inspector panel. Other lens fills permit users to invert, lighten, darken, tint or magnify underlying objects. The magnify fill is particularly useful for renering realistic glass objects. Lens fills are nondestructive, and it is easy to experiment with them.
