NT: a kinder, weaker Unix?
Article Abstract:
Many network managers complain that Windows NT is not as powerful as Unix despite Microsoft's claims that it is a 'kinder, gentler' alternative, but Windows is nevertheless attractive for its simplicity, low hardware and administration costs and ease of management. Market research indicates that design and prepress houses will install more NT servers than any other server platform. Some buyers choose NT because they perceive it as representing the direction the market is going; DTP professionals want to use the same equipment as their peers in order to speed workflow. More and more potential customers will have Windows experience and lack Unix experience as the publishing market widens and more corporate sites purchase hardware and software. Microsoft's market dominance tends to make Windows a default platform to provide the standardization and uniformity businesses prefer.

The Odesta files
Article Abstract:
Odesta Corp's Odesta Document Management System (ODMS) is like a web that keeps document files for one project connected, regardless of which publishing software is used. ODMS keeps track of relationships between writers, editors, graphics, text, page layout, as well as projects, deadlines, and previous revisions. ODMS is a software system for the Macintosh or DEC Vax-based editorial production networks, which brings integration and control to a multivendor system. File access can be closely controlled, so that a user can be barred from a file after completing work. ODMS is based on Odesta's Helix relational data base technology, and the organization of the system looks deceptively simple because a user can bring any sized file into it. ODMS is priced at about $25,000 per network, depending upon hardware systems, network configuration and application requirements.

The Ventura Publisher Macintosh Edition from Ventura Software Inc possesses the unique ability to easily import a wide variety of file formats, making it more competitive among the new Mac and MS-DOS competitors in the page layout software market. Users can move Ventura files between Macs and MSDOS-based microcomputers since Ventura Publisher Macintosh Edition is similar to the GEM, OS/2 and Windows 3.0 versions. The program quickly loaded a GEM Ventura Publisher PC file with GEM line art and text into Mac Ventura via a 3Com LAN Manager server. Price is $795.
