Paint Alchemy 2.0
Article Abstract:
Xaos Tools' $199 Paint Alchemy 2.0 plug-in acts like a full-featured program, allowing users to make digital images look painted. Paint Alchemy is easy and fun to use, has a well-written user's guide and accepts any square PICT file as a brush to use with pre-existing styles. Improvements from previous versions include preset styles bunched around brush categories, a larger preview window, independent memory setting and concurrently viewable floating palettes with a mini Palette Preview window. On the downside, Paint Alchemy is very slow and requires image conversion of CIE color, CMYK and gray-scale to RGB format previous to processing. Recommended for serious creative professions desiring painterly effects, Paint Alchemy requires a host image-editing program, 2.5MB hard disk space, 1MB RAM and a MAC II with System 7.0.

Fractal Design Poser 1.0
Article Abstract:
Fractal Design Corp's Fractal Design Poser draw software is a 3D application designed for manipulating the human form. The user begins by making adjustments to the default figure or one of the 96 action positions. The user can choose to work with a body, skeleton, stick figure or artist's mannequin in either male or female forms. There are eight height choices, six viewing options and 29 preset body proportions. It is easy to manipulate the figures and to establish camera angles and lighting settings. The model can be posed against an imported PICT background and Fractal Design Poser includes a few simple props. Comic-book authors, art directors, multimedia artists and animators will appreciate the capabilities of this program. Fractal Design Poser is a real bargain at its $199 list price.

Macromedia XRes 2.0
Article Abstract:
Macromedia Inc's XRes 2.0, a high-resolution image editor, is powerful and fast. It comes with a new Gradient palette, more brushes and multiobject editing, and it has good masking capabilities. It costs $699, or $99 for an upgrade. It requires at least an 040 Macintosh with 12MB of system memory and 10 MB of hard-disk space. System 7.5 is also needed. XRes should be regarded as a complement to Photoshop, not a substitute for it. For example, Lab and Duotone color modes are lacking. Some third-party plug-in filters work poorly with XRes, and some, such as the KPT Interform module of Kai's Power Tools 3.0, will not work at all. Overall, XRes 2.0 is highly recommended, receiving a top rating of five stars.
