Painter 5
Article Abstract:
MetaCreations' $449 Painter 5 paint software adds many new brush sets and other features, including customization of the control panel through addition of sliders and adjustment controls that previously were several menus away. The Painter screen fills up quickly, however, even with the consolidation of some icons and a better button layout. The new F/X brushes add such effects as bubbles, fire, glow, goo, twister, grain, relief and hue. New dynamic plug-ins make it possible to apply effects to a floater, or any part of an image that is floating as an object. Among the plug-ins allowing real-time manipulation via a control panel are liquid lens, bevel world and glass distortion. The program's cloning feature has been enhanced with the ability to grab image data from several clone targets, and with transparent layers for painting over an image while leaving the original unchanged.

Poser 2
Article Abstract:
Fractal Design's $249 Poser 2.0 modeling rendering software simplifies the creation of detailed, complex human models, yet lacks the capabilities of powerful 3D programs. Poser 2.0 allows users to choose a predefined model, such as man, child or woman, a different body type and different attire. The application then allows users to move the figures correctly and gracefully, with none of the disjointed limbs that plague other 3D modeling offerings. Poser includes an array of animation capabilities that can be expanded by using an intuitive keyframe method. Although the application performs model rendering with animation rather effectively, its bitmap functions require improvement. The addition of dedicated hand and head models would also improve the application.

Canvas 5
Article Abstract:
Deneba Software's $599.95 Canvas 5 image processing software successfully sustains its promise to deliver illustration, image editing and publishing in an inclusive cross-platform package. The fully integrated program works in publication and illustration mode. Its more powerful features include Replicate, Find and Blend. The program easily adjusts text and offers acceptable page layout capabilities. Bitmapping is rather awkward however. The program's best attribute is its seamless integration of traditionally diverse applications. Canvas lacks the sophistication that other more mature packages offer, but it is more than adequate for basic functionality.
