Photo CD turns pro: Kodak's new Professional Photo CD promises to revolutionize conventional prepress work with its instant access to high-quality color images
Article Abstract:
Kodak's Professional Photo CD Imaging Workstation provides an inexpensive way for users to get from photo to layout to color separations. The system requires a CD-ROM drive that can read Mode 2, Form 1 data; CD-ROM device driver software, a small-computer-systems-interface card or a CD-ROM controller board and cables for those who use a microcomputer. Professional Photo CD can change the conventional prepress work flow by incorporating familiar software such as Adobe Photoshop to add information to the Photo CD digital original, that would otherwise have to be scanned by a skilled operator. The system does not replace high-end color separation, however is appropriate for a variety of printed materials. The images cannot be enlarged as much as they can be on high-end systems without losing detail.

A glossary of color prepress terms
Article Abstract:
Definitions are given for terminology concerning color separation, image processing and color printing. CMYK is the acronym for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, the four process colors that, when combined in different percentages, can print every color in the spectrum. RGB is the acronym for Red, Green and Blue. The difference between these two color systems is that RGB is used for transmitted color and CMYK is used for printing. Dot gain is when halftone dots inadvertently increase in size in the printing process and, therefore, darken the image. Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a color printing standard for color mixtures. Colors are controlled by PMS color guides and approved inks that adhere to the standards. Many other terms are defined.
