QuickTime makes big time at Macworld
Article Abstract:
New software packages are introduced at the Macworld Expo for Apple Computer Inc's QuickTime operating system enhancement. QuickTime, an extension to the Apple Macintosh's System 7.0 operating system lets developers integrate multimedia capabilities into their applications. Apple itself announced Ofoto 1.1, a gray-scale image editing package that incorporates QuickTime image compression abilities. Microsoft's Microsoft Word 5.0 and WordPerfect's WordPerfect 2.1 word processing packages also now feature QuickTime. QuickTime gives the packages movies containing animation and video clips with music and sound effects that can be pasted into the programs' documents. QuickTime upgrades for Microsoft Word 5.0 and WordPerfect 2.1 cost $129 and $89, respectively. Radius's Radius TV, $1,699, a multimedia hardware/software system and ImpressIt software, $159, have also been upgraded to support QuickTime. Other announcements are given.

Ben & Jerry's secret ingredient: QuickTime
Article Abstract:
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc, the Vermont-based ice cream manufacturer, has turned to the System 7 extension QuickTime to create an interactive video kiosk to entertain and entice customers. The interactive kiosk was originally conceived as a way to occupy customers waiting for a tour of the plant, but Ben & Jerry's now intends to distribute it to franchises nationwide. The kiosk uses a MicroTouch screen rather than a mouse, and the typeface is the same as that on the ice cream packages. Special sound effects acknowledge user selections and further enhance the sense of interaction. It provides detailed information on the ice cream production process, and also documents some of the company's pro-environment efforts. The cost of each kiosk is about $9,000. The kiosk was created by two Ben & Jerry's employees, tour guide Rik Dryfoos and mainframe programmer Joe Wilkins.
