Reverting to type
Article Abstract:
Atech Software Inc's $79.95 AllType Universal Typeface Converter and the independently authored and free Font Manager are font programs that convert industry typefaces to a typeface of the user's choice. AllType has both a DOS version and a Microsoft Windows version, and successfully creates fonts to support the new Windows 3.1 TrueType format. The program easily and speedily accomplishes conversions to and from a variety of formats, with the possible exception of Agfa Intellifonts. AllType is a promising program for those wishing to convert to TrueType format. Font Manager, written by Dennis Harrington, is available in the public domain at no cost. This easy-to-use program is valuable to users of the Adobe Type 1 format. The user is able to create sets of fonts and move them in and out of memory. Font Manager also has many Adobe-specific features that increase user control, and it eliminates the need for manual maintenance of the font listings.

Reformed characters: turning words into pictures with Corel Draw
Article Abstract:
Use of Corel Systems Corp's Corel Draw PC-based drawing program to create a custom logo is described. Drawing programs allow the outline of a letter to be disassembled into its basic curves and reshaped. The creation of a logo for a woodworking company is used to demonstrate the process: the characters are broken down, objects are combined, much duplication is performed and much saving at just the right time is required. First the unadorned letters of the logo are created in Optima type, then work is begun on the two initial capital letters using the Aachen for the capital C and simple rectangles to create the capital H. Customization of the C and creation of the H are described. The logo should be exported from Corel when completed in EPS, GEM, PCX or some other file format so it can be used in Xerox Ventura Publisher, Aldus PageMaker or another page layout program.

Ready-made art
Article Abstract:
Computer Support Corporation's Arts and Letters graphics package provides a wealth of prepackaged clip art that makes graphic designing easy even for non-artists. The $395 program requires 512Kbytes (640Kbytes recommended), a hard disk, Microsoft Windows 1.04, DOS 2.0, and a Windows-compatible mouse. An IBM AT is recommended. The program offers over 2,200 symbols, icons, and sketches that can be scaled, shaded, slanted, and rotated. An additional library of 8,000 symbols will be available by Fall, 1988. The program also comes equipped with three font families, and 18 optional typefaces are available for $25 each. The program lacks a snap-to-grid feature, which makes precision placement impossible, and ruler access is clumsy, but its versatility and reasonable price make it the ideal program for people whose design ideas outrun their artistic talents.
