SmartSketch 1.0
Article Abstract:
FutureWave Software Inc's $99 SmartSketch 1.0 is a modest Windows-based application that helps users, especially graphics professionals, draw better. For example, drawing a fried egg with the circle in most graphics programs is inappropriate, because the egg will look too perfectly round. With SmartSketch, the artist can draw a circle. If the drawing appears too irregular, the Smooth option will shape it up. SmartSketch has infinite levels of 'undo,' making it a good tool for experimentation. SmartSketch's brush strokes are actually closed Bezier shapes. Because overlapping strokes of the same color automatically become one shape, painted shapes are easy to move and manipulate. The 24-bit color program includes more than 600 items of clip art. Other items of clip art can easily be added and filed by subject. SmartSketch will import DXF, EPS and WMF files. Users who desire CMYK files will have to export their files as EPS files. SmartSketch requires a 386-based PC with 4MB of RAM, 4MB of hard-disk space and Windows 3.1.

Artworks: draw, paint, and even retouch photographs with this low-cost, all-in-one graphics package
Article Abstract:
The Artworks software package from Deneba systems contains a powerful, robust collection of photo-retouching, painting and Bezier drawing tools for a low $149 price. The software does not have all the features of high-end packages, but the tools included enable the creation of high-resolution line art and color comps all within one program. Photo-retouching tools include ones for automatic selection of similarly colored areas, manual blending, The very good set of drawing tools include Bezier and freehand curves, a set of geometric primitives, autotracing preview and floating 'properties' palette. Drawbacks include some non-standard command procedures, inability to reposition pasted art and lack of mouse-driven object alignment, macro creation, text conversion to Bezier curves, text-on-a-path, color separations and exact text kerning and leading control. Artworks is rated a worthwhile value.
