No longer trapped
Article Abstract:
Adobe's In-RIP Trapping technology permits a user to set color trapping parameters for pages and files. Trapping refers to methods that compensate for misregistration between areas of different color on a multicolor press. Adobe's trapping technology can be implemented by installing PostScript 3, which includes In-RIP Trapping. Plug-ins are needed to provide an interface for setting In-RIP specifications. Alternatively, Adobe offers InProduction, an Acrobat-based software product that provides a set of tightly integrated, application-independent tools.

A stitch in tiles
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems' Illustrator, Macromedia FreeHand and Corel Systems' CorelDraw draw software packages all create repeating tile patterns that can be used as fills. With Illustrator, the user can choose the fill patterns provided in the CD-ROM or create new ones. As with the other applications, a bounding rectangle is necessary to define the repeating portion of the tile. The scale tool allows the user to resize the pattern without altering the object. FreeHand has a Tiled option on the Fill Inspector palette that allows the user to paste the pattern into the selected object. In CorelDraw, any bitmap or vector art can be used as a pattern. The Full-Color Bitmap Fill button applies the pattern and the Tiling button allows alteration of the size and proportions.

Strictly business: PDF won't reform bad clients -- it'll just hide their faults
Article Abstract:
Adobe Acrobat 4.0 offers a Portable Document Format (PDF) component that will effect the publishing industry. PDF's capabilities include compression, cross-platform capabilities and ease of proofing, and enables the job to be sent to the printer or another output device. Good clients, those that already work closely with the service provider, will benefit from PDF but the technology may cover up the mistakes of poor customers. Mistakes in type usage, color models, page setup and resolution may not show on low-resolution proofers and monitors, but must be corrected by the service provider. This extra salvage work will cost the client.
