Fast forward
Article Abstract:
New 3 megapixel digital cameras are now available, and their quality indicates that digital imaging is destined to take over in the camera marketplace. Some industry observers say the devices' output quality already surpasses that of film, but they agree that digital cameras are still too expensive for most users. In Feb 2000, at the PMA trade show in Las Vegas, 3 megapixel cameras were on display, priced under $1,000. These cameras offer maximum optical resolutions of 2,048 x 1,536, with no software interpolation. It means users can expect sharp images up to 8 x 10 inches, printed at 200dpi. Toshiba says its PDR-M70 prints crisp images up to 11 x 14 inches.

Digital cameras go on the road
Article Abstract:
The quality of high-end digital cameras is much improved, and the devices are moving out of the studio and are increasingly being used by creative professionals. Until recently, using a digital camera implied making a trade-off between image quality and mobility. Now, according to AP Dir of Technical Marketing Marty Cammarata, 'digital cameras have completely changed the way photojournalists cover the news.' Images are transmitted in to an agency directly, often ahead of text, and images from anywhere in the world can immediately be edited, captioned and used. Although the primary market for high-end digital field cameras remains in photojournalism, the market is rapidly expanding into other areas.

Two megapixels: the future of digital photography is here
Article Abstract:
New 2 megapixel digital cameras may provide the level of image quality required for commercial print work. They support resolutions up to 1,800 by 1,200 pixels to facilitate image resizing, and some feature manual shutter and aperture control, external flash sync and changeable ISOs. No digital cameras priced under $1,000 let users change lenses, however, and their manual controls are rudimentary. They do not require expensive film and processing, and because images can be deleted on the spot photographers can take more shots. Digital cameras are particularly useful for catalog production, photojournalism and web site maintenance. A good digital camera costs between $700 and $1,000, and most 2 megapixel cameras support resolutions of 1,600 by 1,200 pixels, which generates an 8-by-6-inch image at 200 dpi or a 4-by-6-inch image at 266 dpi. They all provide JPEG compression, and most have several compression settings. The quality of the images produced is the ultimate determining factor in selecting a digital camera, and this is a subjective matter for each individual buyer.
