Ventura PicturePro 1.1: this image editor offers top-notch painting tools but has limited drawing capabilities
Article Abstract:
Ventura Software Inc's $795 PicturePro 1.1 desktop publishing package offers high-quality painting tools but limited drawing capabilities. While it is the first Microsoft Windows package that allows both object-oriented lines and shapes, and bit-mapped images to be edited on their own layers, the user must convert the vector objects to bit maps prior to printing the artwork. The result is compromised graphics and type from imagesetters and film recorders. PicturePro's painting layer capabilities are strong, supplying high-quality color correction, separation and filtering effects, and selection tools that let users limit their painting area. PicturePro's painting tools are also very strong, providing a level of versatility and realism that is second only to that found in Fractal Design Painter. PicturePro's drawing capabilities are unimpressive, and its image editor is not worth the price.

ReadySetGo: work in progress
Article Abstract:
ReadySetGo 5.0.6, from Manhattan Graphics Corp, is a convenient $395 color separation program for a Macintosh with System 6.0 and a minimum 2Mbytes RAM. Unsatisfactory results obtained after the first use with ReadySetGo are difficult to alter due to a lack of specific color balance and tone controls for individual images, and few definable press controls. This low-priced all-in-one product offers many capabilities, however, such as spot-color handling to convert Pantone colors or other spot colors for printing, halftone controls for screen frequency, angle and dot shape; default settings for Coated, Uncoated or Newsprint paper stock; and printing options directly from ReadySetGo to plates from any page. There are no apparent color correction tools; adjustment of the RGB-to-CMYK conversion values for the process colors applies to all of the elements of the document.

Ventura Separator with Ventura Publisher: well matched
Article Abstract:
Ventura Separator, $495 from Ventura Software Inc, is the best choice for users who want to work within a single familiar program. The Separator is sold separately for use with Ventura Publisher 4.0 for Windows. System requirements include an 8086-based machine, 20Mbyte hard drive, 4Mbytes RAM, MS-DOS 3.3, Windows 3.0 and a Windows-compatible graphics display card. Halftone screen frequency, angle, dot shape and dot gain can be controlled for the entire page by selecting from a menu of standard settings. Individual images can also be controlled with special settings. Standard paper and press settings can be selected from a menu of options. Separations are printed directly from Ventura Separator or they can be printed as a PostScript file that is sent to the service bureau. The most serious deficiency is the lack of a trapping capability.
