Windows 2000 for creatives
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system is not a major upgrade in terms of the number of new features it offers, but some of is new features are important ones. For example, cooperation between Microsoft and Adobe Systems means the companies' products are more tightly integrated. For another example, Windows 2000 provides color calibration at the system level. However, changing an operating system is a complex undertaking, and if a manager is satisfied with things as they are, changing to Windows 2000 might not be indicated.

Windows 3.0 blasts through the 640K memory barrier
Article Abstract:
The new version 3.0 of Microsoft Windows offers many improved and new features, most notably the ability to overcome the 640Kbyte addresable system memory limits of MS-DOS on Intel 80286- and 80386-based microcomputer. The new memory management capability enables applications to address up to 16Mbytes of memory, to run significantly faster than under previous Windows versions, and more applications to run concurrently and reliably in the protected mode. The increased memory capacity also enables the generation of font sizes up to 96 points or larger and in full resolution. Other 3.0 new or improved features include the new Program Manager, which allows creation and grouping of icons for MS-DOS and Windows applications and assignment of memory and window specifications to each, and the Print Manager, which provides data about the file being printed.

Windows of opportunity for PC types: new tools for Windows inspire PC designers to manipulate typefaces in ways they've never imagined
Article Abstract:
New software tools for Microsoft's Windows graphical user interface inspire IBM PC compatible designers to manipulate typefaces in new ways. The tools include Corel Systems Corp's $595 CorelDraw 3.0, Ares Software Corp's $149 FontMonger, Altsys Corp's $149 Fontographer and ZSoft Corp's $545 Publishers Type Foundry 1.5. The programs, which are expected to have the biggest impact on new font users, will let Windows users perform several tasks. Font conversion will be possible via Windows 3.1's TrueType, which has brought scalable type outlines to the masses. Mix-and-match type collections will be possible; users will be able to copy and paste characters between typefaces and map them to the keyboard. Users wanting to modify an existing typeface will be able to customize individual characters or interpolate between two typefaces.
