Article Abstract:
Several companies develop products that allow Ventura Publisher users to print documents on non-PostScript systems such as Compugraphic or Linotronic typesetters. Product testing took place on a Compugraphic 8400 phototypesetter. The programs tested are Link from Computer Solutions for Publishing, Typesetter's Connection from The 'Puter Group, and Vepset from Mumford Micro Systems. (EDCO Service's Pubset could not be tested since it did not have a Compugraphic driver at the time of the test.) These programs require extensive help and involvement on the part of the type shop. The type shop must buy the program, build width tables, and convert the user's file into typesetting codes. These programs help, but printing Ventura Publisher files on non-PostScript typesetters is far from easy.

Article Abstract:
Inset Systems's $89 Hijaak is a graphics file conversion utility that lets users change graphics files from one of eight formats to any other one on an IBM PC or compatible. Also included in the package is a memory-resident screen capture utility that works only with computers equipped with CGA, EGA or Hercules graphics cards. Conversion from PC to PC were fine but from PC to Mac were only partially successful. Until there is standardized graphics format, Hijaak is a much needed and accommodating utility to have.
