Ambridge in his sights
Article Abstract:
The Radio 4 program, The Archers, clearly demonstrates some of the problems associated with agricultural investment in the UK. A local farmer has formed a consortium to purchase around 1,000 acres of land in the fictional village of Ambridge. The series shows that the consortium will need high quality legal and accountancy advice to avoid difficulties with contracts and tax liability. Two of the farms on the estate are not likely to be good investments therefore they may be sold to their tenants. The storyline in the Archers also shows how confidentiality is very important during a deal.

A year in the country
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of significant developments relating to agricultural law in the UK in 1998. Several cases have clarified the interpretation of section 2 of the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986, which provides that, with a number of exceptions, agricultural lettings for less than one year will be converted into completely protected yearly tenancies. There have also been cases relating to a right of way granted by a deed. It has been established that if a right of way is granted for the use of a particular property, it cannot be used by the grantee for other property he also owns.
