Building blocks of success
Article Abstract:
Crawley will soon have three major office development schemes underway, based on speculation, and approximating 100,000 square feet of space. Prospective customers, such as Dorling Kindersley and the RSPCA, are looking for sites with good value and flexible lease-hold terms. Planning permission granted for new office developments of the future is expected to include only 40% car parking space at the site, which is concerning property developers. Industrial development in the area is still patchy, and there is a lot of existing surplus.

Why manufacturers are taking the reins
Article Abstract:
The growing trend for manufacturers to manage their own distribution needs has led to increasing demand for very high-bay warehouses with sophisticated automation equipment. Such buildings satisfy manufacturers' requirements for a relatively narrow number of lines but high-volume storage needs. However, such warehouses are very specialised and manufacturers often have to buy land and custom-build them.
