Shanghai's salvation pegged to Pudong
Article Abstract:
The Shanghai of today pales beside the Chinese city of old in terms of commerce, economic development and plain excitement. The present city, however, looks forward to a Chinese five-year plan called the Pudong New Area for its possible reinstatement as the premier city of Asia. The plan focuses on infrastructure development, which will have cost $6 billion by 1996. Economic plans and the elimination of many financial restraints, as well as the interest generated among international bodies such as the World Bank, should take care of Shanghai's future.
