The high-tech industries that added so much power to the economics in the 1990's, the question of what will happen to them is viewed through the prism of innovation. The studies conclude that the high-tech activity would reappear as a strong engine of growth in some communities, powering the commercial real estate market.

Many economic forecasters predict that the information age will reduce the value of location in the real estate market. Since information technology, by supporting telecommuting, allows companies and employees to be located literally anywhere, the argument goes that companies and individuals will desert prime, expensive markets. Investors should not sell commercial real estate short as these forecasts of a shrinking commercial and industrial real estate markets may be based on an unverified hypothesis and on hype.
